A Lesson In Public Speaking

rsz_rotary_0202.jpgPublic speaking was the topic of the recent Rotary club meeting at the Canad Inns in Portage.

Wayde Drain, President of the local Toastmasters, was the guest speaker.

He says the organization features a small group of people who provide a forum in which the benefits of public speaking are put into practice.

Drain says people are not only taught to speak but also learn how to listen, collect their thoughts, and respond confidently when interacting with others.

He notes the Toastmasters environment is far from intimidating, with a small number of people working on similar assignments.

He says the organization is founded on constructive criticism, with a focus on improvement.

Drain points to a few simple tips, if put on the spot.

A. Take the time to collect your thoughts. Don't ever feel you need to rush into a response.

B. When interacting with someone, always listen closely to what they are saying.

C. If asked a question, don't be afraid to repeat it, to make sure everything is clear.

D. Instead of indirectly responding to a question using "um" or "uh", remain silent using a pause to formulate a clear and concise response.
