Thanks to aggressive fungicide applications, potato growers have brought the late blight outbreak in Manitoba under control.

"Late blight is always a risk for potato production," says Brian Wilson, potato specialist with Manitoba Agriculture. "Growers are being aggressive with what they can do as far as fungicide goes and dealing with the problem as best they can."

He points out potatoes will often sit in storage for up to 10 months, so growers now need to focus on how they will manage storage conditions to prevent further disease problems. Potatoes can be treated before going into storage to prevent further infection and rotting in storage.
