Nightshade

Nightshade can be a major problem for edible bean growers.

"The plant produces small berries and at harvest time those berries tend to burst and smear the whole sample," says Dennis Lange, agronomist with SaskCan Parent. "It's probably one of the worst weeds."

He says its likely the only case where growers should consider applying herbicide this late in the season. He says it may be better to take the yield loss that comes with spraying than to deal with the major smearing problems during harvest.

Wild buckwheat has also been a problem in edible bean fields this year. However, Lange suggests growers look at preharvest options rather than applying a herbicide during flowering.
