There's some concern coming up about traffic speed around schools in Portage.

RM of Portage Reeve Toby Trimble says it's something that was discussed at their latest meeting and something needs to be done about it. They'll be asking the highway traffic board for the option of setting their own limits.

Trimble notes the speed limits around schools are 50 km/h and studies have shown that some people don't even slow down to that speed. He feels a school zone speed limit would help the police and lead to more tickets for speeding near schools.

The issue has also been raised with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities and Trimble is hopeful they'll relay the concern to the government.
