Oats Hurt By Moisture

Oat growers are expecting below-average yields come harvest.

"I don't think there's any area that even has an average crop," says Manitoba Oat Growers director and Arborg-area farmer Lorne Floyd. "There's certainly going to be less oats harvested this year than normal."

He's hoping the poor crop will help move prices higher.

"There's been quite a surplus for the last couple years. We have to eat through that surplus before we can see prices strengthening, but by the end of this year, stocks should be quite a bit smaller than they are now."

The Manitoba Oat Growers Association held its annual meeting this week at Kelburn Farm.
