The Portage Collegiate Saints of the Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League are midway through their well deserved Christmas break. Head Coach Jo-Anne Clark-Gillespie says the girls have been playing some fantastic hockey leading up to this point in the season. She notes the break is a great time for relaxation but encourages the girls to keep their conditioning up through the break.
"If you've looked at our schedule in January it's absolutely crazy. We have 7 games in January and it's a short month because of exams. So it's going to be tough. We talked to the girls a little bit about time management and this is where they're going to learn how to be a student athlete coming in January, because they have a commitment to the hockey program but there's a commitment to their academics first."
Clark-Gillespie's goal through the month of January is to end with a winning record, something she says is doable. The Saints currently sit in the middle of the pack with a 4-3-1 record. The girls have been expecting a long month as 2 of their earlier games of the year were cancelled and put into January.
"It's going to be a tough month. But you know, they're ready for the 2 weeks off too and we've been on the ice since September 10th so it has been a long time."
The Saints still have just over a week left on their break before they take to the ice on January 7th. They'll face-off against the Oak Park Raiders at home in the PCU Centre.
