News from the Herman Prior 55+ Centre

Summer is finally here which means some of the programs are now ending for the summer. Floor Curling, Floor Shuffleboard, Aquasize and HPC Tai Chi are all finished at this point. Taoist Tai Chi and Wednesday Painting Class will continue at its usual times all summer. Monday Painting and Line Dancing along with Square Dancing and Clogging classes are finished for the summer. All programs that are ending their season will resume in September.

*Please note that the Herman Prior Centre will be closed completely for Canada Day on Wednesday, July 1st and will reopen on Thursday, July 2nd for regular programs and activities.

The June birthday party will be Friday, June 26th. Al and Friends will be the band playing for the dance. Everyone with a June birthday will receive their piece of cake and beverage free! The celebration begins at 1:30pm.

The Prior Centre’s Book Nook is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. If you are looking for book to read or a puzzle to put together, you are sure to find one you like here at the Book Nook. Donations to the Book Nook are always welcome!

Welcome Yanick Lariviere to the Herman Prior Centre!! Yanick is the new meal coordinator for the Centre. Come and join us for lunch! The Herman Prior Centre has a noon meal program Monday to Friday. A hot meal with tea or coffee and dessert is served at noon and costs $7.00. Everyone is welcome. Please call by 11 am to reserve.

In other news, there are a couple of interesting trips ahead in the summer months. The first, a day long trip to Clear Lake, to sight see, shop and enjoy a meal and a riverboat cruise on the pristine, aptly named “Martese”, a beautiful area. The tour bus will leave at 8:30 am from the Prior Centre on Thursday, July 30th and return around 5:00pm. The all-inclusive cost is $75 for members, $85 for non-members. The deadline to register for this very picturesque and enjoyable trip is Friday, June 26th.

We will also be attending Rainbow Stage to see "Sister Act" on Wednesday, August 26th; cost is $80.00 for members and $90.00 for non-members. Deadline to register is Friday, July 24. The trip to Folklorama is on Tuesday, August 11th. The bus leaves the Prior Centre at 4:30 pm and will include three pavilions consisting of Belgian, Scotland and Brazil and will include entertainment and a dish from each pavilion represented, always an interesting experience. The cost is $115 for members and $125 for non-members. The deadline to register is July 17th. Prairie Dog Central "Grosse Isle Fall Supper" is on Saturday, September 5th; cost is $75.00 for members and $85.00 non-members. The deadline to register is Friday, August 7th. Take time to relax with friends and family as you join us for the Grosse Isle Fall Supper. We will board the train at Prairie Dog Central and arrive in Grosse Isle for supper. The supper will be held at the Grosse Isle Community Hall which is a short 5 minute walk.If you are interested in going on any of these trips or have suggestions for new ones stop in, call or email the Prior Centre.

Strawberry Day Dance will be on Friday, July 12th with live music provided by The Versatiles. This wonderful afternoon begins with a noon meal at 12 noon followed by a dance at 1:30 pm with fresh strawberries coming at 3:00 pm, followed by strawberries and ice cream for $3.00. Bring a friend or two and come out for a great afternoon filled with friends, music and great laughs. Don't forget to wear something red! There will be spot prizes.

The Herman Prior Centre is always looking for volunteers! Time commitments would be a morning or afternoon on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Opportunities include front desk reception, kitchen help or program coordination. We can also use volunteers to help with set-up and take down for special events, or for odd jobs around the Centre. Give us a call or drop by if you are interested in volunteering!

Herman Prior Centre 2015 memberships are still available. The Prior Centre provides programs and services such as recreational activities, healthy lifestyle and educational programs, along with leadership and volunteer opportunities. Health services include hearing, foot care and blood pressure clinics. Come in and renew or purchase a membership. The cost is still only $15.00 for the year.
