News from the Centre, by Donna Gervais

What a great summer we're having! We're enjoying our flowers and fresh vegetables, and working at keeping up with the weeds! The locally grown strawberries were great and I hope you are enjoying the raspberries and Saskatoons now.

Don't forget that all of the following events and road trips are open to everyone, no age restrictions. Note that July 31st is the deadline for registering for a couple of the following events. Most events are available at reduced cost for members, so if you are 55 years or more and you are interested in joining the fun, please consider becoming a member for $15.00 a year. Visit the Prior Centre in person, or contact the Centre at (204) 857-6951 or hp55plus@mymts.net.

BBQ Fundraiser at Portage Co-op - Friday, July 31st from 11 am to 1 pm

A hotdog, drink and chips for $5.00 or smokie/hamburger, drink and chips for $6.00. This is a fundraiser with all proceeds going towards the programs and activities offered at the Centre.

Clear Lake Bus Trip

If you weren't on the bus that left on July 30th from the Herman Prior Centre, then you missed the day-long trip to Clear Lake for sight-seeing, shopping, and a meal and cruise aboard the "Martese". If you missed it this year, please watch for it next summer.

Trip to Belgium, Scotland and Brazil

It's not really a trip to those countries, but Folklorama is the closest best substitute! This year the bus will take us to the pavilions representing Belgium, Scotland, and Brazil on Tuesday, August 11. Cost is $115.00 for members and $125.00 for non-members. Deadline to register is July 31. Bus departs from Prior Centre at 4:30 p.m. and returns at midnight.

Rainbow Stage - "Sister Act"

Attending a play at Rainbow Stage is another yearly event. We'll be attending "Sister Act" on Wednesday, August 26. Cost is $80.00 for members and $90.00 for non-members. Deadline to register is July 31. Bus leaves the Prior Centre at 6:00 and returns at 11:45.

When was the last time you took a ride on a train?

Join us on the Prairie Dog Central when we travel to Grosse Isle Fall Supper on Saturday, September 5. Cost is $75.00 for members and $85.00 for non-members. Deadline to register is August 7. We board the bus at 2:30 and we're back to the Centre at 9:45 pm.

Books, puzzles, feet, and ears

Our regular Book Nook hours and Gift Shop hours are from 9 am to 4 pm. You'll find lots of donated used books and puzzles for sale in the Book Nook. The Gift Shop features beautiful items hand-made by members of the Prior Centre. Podiatrist Dr. Bellmont will be at the foot care clinic on August 4th. Beltone Hearing from Brandon will be visiting the Prior Centre on August 10, 24 and 31. You need to make an appointment by calling them at 1-800-661-2653.

Complete meals at noon for $7.00

The Herman Prior kitchen serves a noon meal every day from Monday to Friday at 12:00. It's available to everyone for $7.00, but you must register by 11:00 on the day you want to attend. It's an excellent meal at a very reasonable price. Perfect if you are shopping and/or working in downtown Portage, and affordable enough so you can bring a friend or co-worker.
