With the Shindleman Aquatic Centre out of commission for the Winter, the Central Plains Sea Lions' Swim Club future is unclear.

Swim Coach Rob Pehura says they've been in touch with parents to discuss a couple of options.

"At this point we did a poll with our parents, and we had some options. We could travel to Brandon or Shilo, or we could travel to Winnipeg, or we could suspend the club for a year. The majority of the membership indicated that they wanted to suspend their membership. So what's happened is we have a chunk of the top group -- the older swimmers -- to the Brandon Blue fins Brandon or the St. James Seals in Winnipeg for swimming this year. Next year the club will be open and the hope is that these kids all come back and we continue off from where we left off."

Pehura says the loss of the pool will really hinder his younger swimmers, and they may never recover from the season off.

"In terms of the impact, it's going to have a big impact on our developmental group. That group, I spent 4 years building, and we kind of got to the point after an Olympic year that we had a wait list of 32 and the bulk of our swimmers were younger at the ages of 10 and under. So those are kind of the years where you hook the kids on the sport, it's going to decimate and destroy everything in there because the kids are going to lose a year. We're going to lose kids to other sports, other activities, they may just lose interest because there were a lot of kids that were looking forward to this season. They were going to be swimming more, going to competitions, and now that's gone."

He hopes after the year off the older swimmers will return.

"Swimmers are going to be going to either the Brandon Blue Fins or St. James Seals in Winnipeg. Then next year the club will be up and running again, and the hope is these kids will all come back and we continue off from where they left off."

Pehura says it was a big shock to all of their members and himself, but they're going to have to find a way to move past it. He adds a lot of people are affected by the closure including triathletes and student lifeguards.
