Portage Terriers opened the MJHL's 2016-17 regular season in Virden tonight. They posted a 4-0 victory over the Oil Capitals.

The first period was scoreless, but in the second, Brandon Stanley scored what turned out to be the winner at 13:13.

In the third, Ryan Mignault had a goal and an assist, while Ashton Clark and Jeremy Leipsic rounded out the scoring.

Brock Aiken got the win in goal, making 30 saves, and earning first star honours. The Terriers directed 25 shots at Virden's Patrick Zubick.

Terriers' coach and GM Blake Spiller thinks neither team was very good at first.

"As the game went on, I thought we started to make some plays. And obviously, the goal by Mignault -- kind of a soft one -- that kind of got us going after that. I thought Aiken was real good for us tonight. I think we had four penalty kills in the first period, so he was huge for us. Could have made a difference if they get one early on us."

Spiller's pleased with the play of rookie goalie Brock Aiken.

"You never know when your goaltender's a rookie in his first game. So I thought he was a real composed guy. You never know on the opening night jitters, but I thought he was composed the whole night through, and made a couple of big saves."

The Terriers and Oil Capitals meet Sunday at the PCU Centre. Game time's 6:30.

Other action tonight saw Swan Valley beat Dauphin 3-1. Steinbach blasted Waywayseecapo 6-2. Winkler got by Neepawa 3-1. Selkirk edged Winnipeg 3-2.
