The Portage Terriers cut a deal with the Dauphin Kings that will change the look of both teams' forward groups.

The Terriers acquired the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) playing rights of 19-year-old forwards Kirklan Lycar and Kelby Picard from Dauphin in exchange for 20-year-old forwards Ashton Clark, Howard Yawit, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) list rights of forward Matthew Pitchenese and future considerations, the team announced Tuesday.

Lycar, of Elma, Man., had five points (3-2—5) in five games for Dauphin this season. The 6-foot, 181-pound centre enjoyed a strong campaign during the 2015-16 season, netting 54 points (24-30—54) in 60 games.

Listed a 6-foot, 190-pounds, Picard had just one point and 16 penalty minutes in five games with the Kings this season. The Beausejour, Man., native had seven points (3-4—7) and 104 penalty minutes in 2015-16, his first in the MJHL.

“Picard is a hard-working, gritty, energy type of guy. Lycar is an offensive player, he's got good vision and good hands,” says Terriers head coach/GM Blake Spiller. “We think both will help us right now, and obviously we're going to get an extra year (of eligibility) out of them.”

Both forwards will make their Terriers debuts tomorrow at home against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

Yawit's and Clark's stay with the Terriers was short. Both were acquired in an offseason trade with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Melfort Mustangs. Clark, listed at 6-foot-2, 174-pounds, was off to a fairly sound offensive start with 11 points (7-4—11) in 12 games with the Terriers this season. Yawit had just two points (1-1—2) in 11 games.

“We weren't looking to move these guys, it's the price of trying to get a deal done,” Spiller says. “But at the same time we're excited to add the players we're getting.”
