The Town of Carman is one step closer to passing its 2012 budget. The financial plan passed second reading last week, and Deputy Mayor Jane Swanton says council is working very hard at maintaining services in the community, while keeping property taxes in line. This is an assessment year, and the Town of Carman saw its taxable assessment increase by $6.3 million to $94 million. She notes new construction was also higher.

Swanton points out a lot of money this year will be spent paying down debt from sewer repairs that were required last year. The town will make the first of three payments on their loan of $650,000 in 2012.

She says there are not many visual projects lined up for this year, but feels ratepayers will be pleased with the amount of money council is spending and how they are spending it. Council is looking to increase its spending by $214,000 in 2012.

As far as individual property taxes, Swanton explains property values have changed and some residents will see an increase while others will see a decrease in 2012. Right now she notes they are waiting for Prairie Rose School Division to pass its budget, and then the town's final budget numbers will be presented at a special meeting set for March 20th.

Swanton stresses anyone with questions regarding their property taxes are encouraged to ask questions. She tells us she is very comfortable dealing with mill rates, tax dollars, and other areas of concern. Swanton adds they are all working for the greater good, the improvements planned for 2012 are items that need attention, and council is cautious with funds. At the same time she says they want to see the community progress.
