Cost is a concern for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities when it comes to the province's Accessibility Plan.

Executive Director Joe Masi says AMM was appointed to the Accessibility Council by the province to look at how communities as a whole could be more accessible to those with a disability. Masi notes this initiative began with the previous NDP government and has continued with the new Conservative government.

"So we worked pretty close with the council to try to develop some templates to provide municipalities and other groups with a template. So, that's where we are at the moment."

Masi says AMM's main concern at the moment is how these changes in accessibility are going to affect the municipalities financially.

"After these plans are developed and it's identified what needs to be done, there are going to be costs associated with the standard that will be developed. How will those costs be funded by the municipalities?"

He adds municipalities and communities recognize the need for accessibility, however, he says AMM has been informing the province about this concern telling them there should be funding attached to the plan to help municipalities and communities implement the regulations.

Masi says at this point municipalities are in the planning stage and working on how they could effectively create an accessible community.
