The Long Plain First Nation is getting just over $21 million dollars from Ottawa as part of a long standing land claim. Under the agreement, the federal government will pay $21.3 million in financial compensation, though there is no land component.  This claim dates back to the original signing ceremony back in 1871. A settlement in 1994 resolved Long Plain’s land entitlement claim.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister John Duncan says this settlement not only honours  past commitments to the Long Plain, but will also go a long way in creating new opportunities for the first nation.
