Many rural residents in Manitoba have been un-served or under-served when it comes to broadband internet access. A new network has been built by NetSet Communications to remedy the problem for more than 22 thousand households.

Scott Toderash, Director of Enterprise Solutions for NetSet, tells us over the past year they have constructed 50 brand new 250 foot towers, and retrofitted more than 100 other existing towers, in order to launch their service. He explains the project extends high speed internet service to more than 200 communities. Toderash says it is residents, farmers, students, and business owners who will benefit greatly from this network. Right now there are customers testing the system.

NetSet will service 7 distinct geographic regions in Manitoba including:
Wheat Belt Region: Morden, Carman, Crystal City, Glenora and surrounding areas
Selkirk & Interlake Region: Gypsumville, Fairford, Ashern, Lundar, St Laurent, Arborg and surrounding areas
Parkland: Swan River Valley, Roblin, Russell, Dauphin, Ochre River and surrounding areas
Carrot Valley: The Pas, Flin Flon, Cranberry Portage and surrounding areas
Eastman: Lac du Bonnet, Victoria Beach, Pine Falls, Hadashville, Ste. Genevieve, Anola, Seven Sisters Falls
Brandon and Westman: Brandon area, Virden, Melita, Deloraine, Souris, Killarney, Boissevain, Brandon Hills, Shoal Lake, Birtle
Central Manitoba: Portage la Prairie area, Whitehorse Plains Region, Carberry, MacGregor, Starbuck

Toderash points out NetSet customers will be using different technology than other companies that rely on satellites or cell phone service.

At this point NetSet doesn't have any specific plans for expansion to other parts of Manitoba but will instead be focusing on getting customers up and running with this existing network. Toderash says they'll be looking to see where the demand is, and if there are gaps in the service area.
