PCRC Community Facilitator Mary Lynn Moffat

The Portage Community Revitalization Project has received a huge $300,000 boost from the Government to develop and implement a project in Portage la Prairie. PCRC Community Facilitator Mary Lynn Moffat says they are delighted at the announcement from Candice Hoeppner and are looking forward to moving it ahead.

The 300,000 is towards a 3 year project that will support women and community partners, to develop and implement a community plan to promote women's economic security and prosperity in Portage. Moffat notes they'lll be looking at building on existing research and momentum in the community. The project's going to bring together women and community partners to collectively identify the gaps, priorities, opportunities, supports, and potential strategies to support women's economic security. She adds its there's going to be two main focuses one is building the knowledge of women, community groups, businesses, and stakeholders to work together on issues of economic security and the other is to develop and implement a community plan as prioritized by women in the community. Moffat stresses this project is really going to involve the women themselves in looking at the issues some of the will include child care, transportation, education, skills development, financial literacy, and so on.

Moffat says this is another one of the areas that was identified in the social plan. The opportunity was presented through the Status of Women for applications for projects relating to working with young women and women and their economic security. She explains a lot of work went into the proposal, adding when you're applying for $300,000 worth of funds it's not something that's handed out with a one page letter. Moffat notes there was a lot of detail put together for the proposal, the results are wonderful, and its going to be very beneficial to portage.
