Portage la Prairie has reached a deal on R.C.M.P. service in the city until 2032. There are fairly minimal differences between the old contract and the new 20 year agreement. The most important provision however allows the city to have more input into the hiring process for Detachment Commander in the future. Councilor Ryan Espey says this is an important addition as it provides them more input in the process.

Mayor Earl Porter says the contract will remain a 70-30 split. he says that means Portage will pay 70% of the cost per officer with the federal government paying the other 30%.  There are 28 officers assigned to Portage la Prairie, so council has budgeted  $2,875,000 for the 2012 R.C.M.P. contract to cover the expenditure. the new agreement is being offered just prior to expiry of the current deal on April 1st.
