Colin Craig of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says the cuts could of been deeper in Ottawa's latest budget. Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has handed down the details, which include a 10% cut to funding to the C.B.C., the elimination of just over 19,200 federal positions and raising the eligible age for old age security from 65 to 67.

Canadian Taxpayers Federation Prairie Spokesperson Colin Craig says while these moves are dramatic, they will not be as impactful as they would of hoped.  Craig says going into the budget, there had been some media reports that suggested that up to $7 billion dollars in cuts could be made. he notes that at the end of the day, the government spending has actually increased by about $4 billion dollars from last year.

Craig says there is good news and bad news in the numbers. The good being that there are some departments that will see bureaucratic cuts over the next few years. The bad being the overall government spending increase.  He notes that for the average Canadian, the biggest immediate impact they will likely notice is actually the phasing out of the penny.
