A city-wide garage sale is about to take place here in Portage la Prairie.

The sale is being hosted by the Portage Heritage Committee organization, they are asking community members to drop off their items in order to raise some funds. President of the Heritage Club Tom McCartney explains what the sale is all about.

"The garage sale is a fundraiser for the expenses and all the rest that goes with it," says the president . "So, we thought that we would try a garage sale and see how that would go. Of course with the pandemic, it kinda shut everything down. This is a effort to start to get things going again."

The Committee had the first of three drop-off days on Monday. The other days being Saturday, October 8th from 9 a.m., and Monday, October 10th at 7 p.m.

"There is more than just the sale, its coming to the station and you might see three or four trains go through. We are just trying to get the community back involved because you know we have been shut down like a lot of non-profits. We haven't been able to operate. So we are trying to encourage the community and anybody else to drop in. So I encourage you to come down on the fifteenth and we'll show you around."

McCartney says that the station is a one of a kind and that it's amazing to have something like this in Portage.

"The railroad has had a long history in this community and it's very unique because the CP and the CN rail actually cross. It has a history that needs to be recognized."

The garage sale will take place at the train station on Saturday, October 15th starting at 9 a.m.
