The Portage la Prairie Model Railway Club is looking to get the word out about their museum.

The museum is nestled within the old Canadian Pacific Railway Station, which was built in 1893.

The old station was decommissioned as a railway station when Via Rail made the Switch From C.P. Rail to Canadian National Railways. The building was then used as a work building before the club acquired it.

President Malcolm Stanley says the club has taken time to make substantial upgrades.

"The room was not finished. It needed a whole lot of work done with the walls and everything else. We filled in the windows from inside and insulated, so they put in a new wall. The last thing they did was dropped the ceiling and put LED lights in there now. So, that's why it's so clean and bright."

The club has around 14 members and runs three separate displays including a HO Scale and N Scale track. They also have a Thomas the Tank Engine set for kids to get some hands-on experience.

Stanley says he's put over 10 years of work into this project.

"I don't know where the time went, and when we work it out, amazingly, the whole thing was done with volunteers. The only thing we didn't have for volunteer work was an electrician. It's just been a labour of love as we come in (and work)."

The club has faced hardships during the pandemic, and at one point was not sure if they were going to be able to operate this year.

Stanley says they're happy to show you around.

"We're trying to be open two days a week. So, we're open Monday in the evening and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. People can come in, and that's going to be until the end of September. Then, we will be closed for the better part of a month to do some more work we want to do."
