Portage's UNICEF coordinator says this year's campaign nearly doubled last year's results.

Through a change in campaign format, over 52 hundred dollars in donations were made locally -- that's up from three thousand the previous year.

Bev Dewis explains the money will help fund several humanitarian efforts, including the "Schools in Africa" program and HIV/AIDS relief.

UNICEF's door-to-door campaign was replaced by a month-long initiative within Portage schools where students were educated of third world countries.  it also extended to local businesses where donations were being accepted.

Dewis believes the new campaign is more effective and will be used for following years.
