After a few months in the Mayor's chair, Ray Muirhead and his Carberry council are looking to better the community.

Muirhead served two 3-year terms as a councillor between 1989 and 1995 before returning for another term between 2018 and 2022. Last October, he ran for Mayor and was declared the winner.

He says he had the time to step up and he was ready to take on more responsibility in the town.

"I own a lot of property in town and I pay a lot of taxes and I just wanted to make sure they're all going to the right place," says Muirhead. "I take an interest. I worked for 37 years at the local plant out here and when I retired, I had all the time in the world to do these sorts of things and look after my properties, and I thought, this would be something I'd be interested in getting back into."

After finishing his last term, he decided, it was now or never when it came to running for Mayor. He adds it was humbling to see the support of the community.

"I talk to a lot of people. I'm the guy that gets out and about. I do the coffee shop thing. I'm in the grocery store. I'm on the street, so I talk to everybody. I have a wide swath of people that I communicate with and I just hear what their concerns are," says Muirhead. "I just thought that it would be good to get in and try to look after some of them. I was concerned about everything that everybody else is concerned about -- the healthcare, the protective services, the whole bit. I thought I could make a difference."

The lifelong Carberry resident says they have a strong council around the table. Bill Kalinowich, John Anderson, and Mike Sudak return while they are joined by new councillor Emma Denton.
