Good news is coming for Manitoba's commercial truck operators who are safe drivers on the road.

The Manitoba government is creating a new standard for assigning safety ratings to companies operating commercial vehicles.

Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler made the announcement Friday that the new system will better serve motor carriers and reward drivers for safe operations. Minister Schuler says they reviewed the current provincial Safety Fitness Certificate (SFC) Program and consulted with industry members to update and modernize the system.

Manitoba Trucking Association executive director, Terry Shaw, says they have been advocating for changes to the assessment of Safety Ratings and are pleased to see what improvements have been made. He added, in a release, that they look forward to continuing the communication with the government to enhance safety on our roadways.

The new policy will see the province assign a consistent safety rating to all carriers with a similar on-road performance record, regardless of historical audit status.
