Five centres are vying to be the site of a 100 million dollar canola crushing plant to be built by Winnipeg's James Richardson International.

Portage la Prairie is on the list, along with Brandon, two Saskatchewan centres, and one in North Dakota.

Mayor Ian MacKenzie's happy the city has a real chance at the plant. He believes the next step is to highlight this city's advantages to the Richardson group.
MacKenzie's convinced Portage's location in relation to the farming community will be key in bringing the canola plant here.
It's expected construction will begin this fall.
