The City of Portage la Prairie says its received reports of door-to-door sales people soliciting products claiming to be affiliated with the city.

In a statement on its website, the City says it's not working with any door-to-door solicitors to sell any type of product. According to the city's Director of Corporate Services Cathie McFarlane, the public notice was issued after a resident reported earlier this week a person trying to sell water filters at their home claimed their product had been selected by the city to be distributed to improve their water.

“In this particular case, the person had offered to come in and run some tests to make on their water and wanted to install (a product) on their water meter,” says McFarlane. “In addition to that, the resident had reported various sales tactics and different things that led us to believe it was not really a legitimate offer they were trying to sell this individual.”

McFarlane says there's been other incidents reported recently where door-to-door sales people have tried similar tactics in trying to sell products for furnaces, air conditioners or hot water heaters.

A city employee who arrives at your residence for any service will always have proper identification, McFarlane adds.

The city statement also reminds residents that, according to The Consumer Protection Act, every province provides a “cooling-off period” during which you may cancel a contract you make with a door-to-door salesperson for any reason.
