Doreen "Jean" McCulloch

January 8, 1924 - April 27, 2023

 

We are saddened to announce the passing of Doreen "Jean" McCulloch of Portage la Prairie at the Portage and District General Hospital on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at the age of 99 years.

Predeceased by husband Jack McCulloch, parents Frank and Dorothy Hempston, in-laws Walter and Grace Anderson, Margaret Leslie, Kay Dennis, Les and Shirley Marks, Joan Watson, Don McCulloch and great-granddaughter Rorie Knelsen.  

She leaves to mourn her passing son Pat (Rose) McCulloch of Portage la Prairie, MB, daughter Lynn (Cliff) Hayward of MacGregor, MB, four grandchildren - Mike (Kim) Hayward, Mark Hayward, Dawn (Stacey) Knelsen, Glenn (Nikki) McCulloch.  Nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, In-laws Harvey Watson, Louise McCulloch and many nieces and nephews. 

Jean was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England on January 8, 1924 where she resided for the next 22 years.  She was 15 when World War 2 broke out.  When the schools closed, Jean went to work in the payroll department of Hawker Aircraft until the war ended.  During this time she met Jack and they were married on March 28, 1944.

She emigrated to Canada as a war bride, arriving in Manitoba on February 14, 1946.  From 1946 they farmed at Rossendale until poor health necessitated a move to Portage la Prairie in 2006.  From 2011, she had been a resident of Lions Prairie Manor in Portage.

Jean enjoyed travelling, camping, family time, reading, painting, carvings, sketching and watching curling.
