Tuesday night's Portage la Prairie School Division board meeting was the second of the school year and went over a variety of topics, including:

  • School Board Elections coming up on October 26th, with 14 names on the ballot.
  • Orange Shirt Day being observed on September 29th, as there are no classes on the 30th.
  • October being proclaimed as Dyslexia Awareness Month in Manitoba.
  • Terry Fox runs happening in the coming days and weeks at schools within Portage.

Todd Cuddington took time during his Superintendent's report to speak about Dyslexia Awareness Month being proclaimed by Manitoba Education MInister Wayne Ewasko.

"10 to 15 per cent of the Canadian population struggles with a learning disability. Up to 80 per cent of children with learning disabilities have difficulty learning to read. So, within our division, we are working as a united group to try and overcome some of these challenges that children face when they are having difficulty with literacy skills. So, we'll be recognizing Dyslexia Awareness month."

The next board meeting is scheduled for October 11th.
