Eric Giesbrecht is the 2021 Portage Disc Golf Open champion.

The Winkler product was declared the winner of the event this past Saturday after defeating Brad Gerbrandt of Winnipeg in a second playoff hole after both were tied at 15-under-par after two rounds. Jason The of Winnipeg finished one stroke back in third while Portage la Prairie's Kevin Desrosiers finished fourth at 7-under-par.

Tournament director Cody Buhler says the weather didn't cooperate at the start of the event but it did get better.

"It was raining a lot before the event, and so the first round was pretty wet and slippery and quite muddy on the tee boxes, but we allowed the players a little bit of extra room to tee off," says Buhler. "The rain slowly ended during the first round and it turned out to be a beautiful day."

This was the seventh edition of the tournament and the fourth sanctioned tournament in a row. Buhler says it regularly sells out quickly and people come from all over to play Portage's course.

"It's really creating an event that a lot of disc golfers in Manitoba want to be at," says Buhler. "It's a real draw to the community. We saw people coming to Portage throughout the week practicing getting ready for the tournament, and I just kept hearing the feedback of how they love our course in the fact that it's a little bit smaller. You don't have to have a big arm to be good at this event, but it's quite technical and so you really have to be on your A-game if you want to shoot a good score."

Caleb Friesen won the Advanced category while Kevin Talgoy of Winnipeg took home the title in the Intermediate category. Other winners include Sharon Enns of Brandon (Recreational) and Shannon Robinson (Recreational Women).
