The number of motor vehicle collisions in April may be cause for concern, especially when compared to April of last year.

The Manitoba RCMP released their monthly crime stats for the month and the West District, which includes Portage la Prairie, saw a jump in both serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions. This past April, there were three serious collisions, when there were none in April 2022. There were also four fatal collisions, when there was only one, in the previous month.

Regarding other calls for service, the West District saw the largest jump in the common police activities category, such as wellbeing checks or suspicious person calls. These types of calls climbed 14 per cent, from 499 to 571. The crimes against property category also increased, but by just six per cent. It did have the highest total of calls, however, jumping from 577 to 611.

The category with the smallest increase was crimes against person. The number of calls only increased by one per cent, from 307 to 310. The drug enforcement category was the only one to fall when compared to April 2022. There was a drop of four per cent, from 45 to 43.

The total number of traffic enforcement tickets issued, which is combined by the RCMP to include all districts, had a 28 per cent increase. The number of tickets issued jumped from 2,126 to 2,739.
