It's been a mostly mosquito-free summer in Portage la Prairie. The population is low thanks the hot, dry weather.

The City hasn't stopped surveillance and larviciding, though. Parks Manager Dave Green notes checks are done weekly. He adds because of low mosquito populations, it's possible they'll save some money, but not a lot, especially if there's any significant wet weather.

The city itself, as well as a three kilometre perimeter around it are subjected to weekly inspections. Green says if necessary, larviciding is carried out.

He adds no West Nile carrying mosquitoes have been found in Portage, so their actions right now are preventive.
