Dakota Tipi First Nation's new credit card was launched this morning.

It allows for direct access to social assistance funds, and is the first of its kind in Canada.

Chief Cornell Pashe says 47 people are eligible, and 25 have already been issued cards. He admits the implications of having the system haven't sunk in yet, adding it's a positive step for the community. Among the benefits is no more cheque-cashing fees.

Pashe believes this is a milestone for first nations, and is proud his community is the first. He notes they're receiving numerous calls about how to obtain a similar system.

There was about a month's delay in the launch, and Pashe assures the system's been tested and is working.
