The Portage Collegiate Trojans are now above 0.500 in 2023.

PCI took down the Garden Valley Zodiacs 6-3 on home ice last night to improve to 3-2 in the new year and 13-3 throughout the entire season. Forward Cam Sarna says effort was the key in this one.

"We were working hard. We would fore-check real hard, and we were on them. We never let off them, and we worked our butts off out there."

Sarna had a stellar game, picking up a point on every goal except for one. JJ Oke scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist, while Maddox Shindle and Ben Matthews-McCulley picked up a pair of assists.

While the team was happy to get their first set of consecutive wins in the new year, the Trojans have had some struggles in 2023.

"I think we have to work on our breakout," Sarna says. "We're really struggling to get the puck out of our zone. We're getting better at it but we have to keep on working on that."

PCI has a quick turnaround as they are back on the ice tonight in Morden to take on the Thunder, the only team ahead of them in the standings.

"They're definitely a strong team. They have some of the best players in the league, so we have to watch out for them," Sarna explains. "We just have to shut them down like we shut down GVC (Garden Valley Collegiate)."

These two powerhouses will square off tonight in Morden with puck drop set for 6:30.
