Foreign-trained doctors can now compete with Canadian medical students for resident spots.

Foreign-trained doctors can now compete head-to-head with Canadian medical students for residencies.

Manitoba is allowing foreign-trained doctors to apply in the first round of the Canadian Resident Matching Service. The service links medical grads with residency positions.

Dennis Fortier Regional Chief of Staff for the Central Regional Health Authority says this should not effect Canadian med students because there are openings.

Fortier thinks this will improve health care because doctors who leave Canadian residencies are very capable and job ready.

Meanwhile when hiring foreign-trained doctors fortier says they are unsure if they understand the Canadian system.
