A man is ordered to return what he received from a fraudulent claim

A man faces charges after his plan to scam Manitoba Public Insurance was revealed.

Danny Dimko Atanasovic burned his vehicle in a remote location near Marquette in 2003, motivated by struggles in making lease payments.  He then filed a theft report with the Headingly RCMP.

Last week in court he came clean with the offences, and has also been ordered to pay over 26 thousand dollars in restitution to MPI.

MPI spokesperson John Douglas notes these fraud discoveries are part of a big thing.  Last year alone, MPI saved over 12 million dollars through the discovery of fraudulent claims.  Douglas notes these fraudulent claims directly affect all Manitobans -- the more claims they have, the more they have to collect.

In this case he says there were many indications of a fraudulent claim, most significantly the fact the vehicle wasn't hot-wired.
