The Harper government's budget will be read in the House of Commons today.

Whether it passes is up to the opposition parties, so there's speculation about an election.

That aside, budget time is always a concern for Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches. He hopes the budget has a provision to achieve the Kelowna Accord's targets, which would recognize the crisis on first nations.

Meeches admits he's uncertain the Tories will act on first nations issues, but adds the prime minister has surprised people with his green initiative.

If there's action taken, Meeches believes it has to address all aboriginal matters, not a single issue. Economic development, healthcare, education, housing, and land claims are the main areas Meeches believes require attention.
