Two classmates of Grade 6 classes in MacGregor Elementary School raised just over $400 for Habitat for Humanity by way of a story and poem contest.

Principal Bryan Marriott says Mrs. Zander's class student Heidi Hill and Ms. Manns' class student Jayla Taylorson were part of the effort.

Jayla says the students had to write a poem or essay about the meaning of home.

"We would write a poem or an essay," adds Heidi. "And then every poem or essay that was handed in, the business would put $10 toward that. Home really matters to me, and I did a list of things that were really important -- my own bathroom, and bed and blankets."

Marriott explains that it's been part of the focus of the school last month.

"It was an extension of I Love to Read Month," says Marriott. "We were trying to do good things in the world and acts of kindness throughout the world and through our communities. It was just another great thing for our youth to get involved in and understand that there are people in the world that are less fortunate than kids at MES -- just little tiny things like writing a poem or a short story can make a big difference."

"That was just a great project for our kids and staff to take part in and we're super proud of all the work they did on that."
