Manitoba Agriculture Entomologist John Gavloski is keeping an eye out for BT resistance among European Corn Borer.

BT is a toxin-producing bacteria that is used to kill European Corn Borer. Certain types of corn have the toxin built in.

Gavloski says having too much BT corn can become a problem.

"With BT corn you need a refuge, you need some suseptible plants to harbour, at least enough corn borers that you can reduce the odds of them developing resistance to the toxin."

The samples of European Corn Borer collected will be sent to the University of Guelph to determine if they are susceptible to the BT toxins.
