A 17-year-old Portage Collegiate Institute student is making waves in the swimming community.

Last Monday evening, Matthew McEwing was named the Rural Male Swimmer of the Year for his efforts during last year's season on behalf, an honour that took him a little bit by surprise.

"To be honest, I wasn't expecting it, and it's kind of nice to see a bit of hard work pay off."

McEwing says he swims three times weekly for the Central Plains Sea Lions Swim Team and loves every second of it.

"It's good! I like seeing the familiar swimmers, seeing how they do, and going to meets with them. It's pretty fun."

The Portager notes that he has been swimming on and off since he was in Grade 5, and his passion for the sport with continue to burn well into the future.
