The Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in Portage says September is about raising awareness.

It's Big Brothers Big Sisters month throughout the country, and executive director Dawn Froese wants people to realize the agency is a viable option for volunteer time.

She explains the nation is experiencing a shortage of mentors.  Froese stresses one mentor can make a significant impact to the community, as it decreases the chances a child will become involved with drugs and alcohol, and also helps to break the social assistance cycle.

Those wanting more information of the program are being given an opportunity -- the local chapter is holding an informational forum at the Portage City Library on Thursday.  those who visit aren't required to commit.
