Manitoba Pork Council is expressing its excitement over Hytek's purchase of the Spring Hill Farms hog processing plant near Neepawa.

At the same time, Chair Karl Kynoch is disappointed the La Broquerie-based company is abandoning plans to construct the Olywest project in Winnipeg.

He adds the industry was hoping another processing facility would be established that would add much needed shackle space.

Kynoch notes there is still a need for another processor in the province despite the Maple Leaf plant in Brandon working its way up to a full second shift.

He adds it will probably take a while to find another interested company because of the unfavourable business climate currently.
