10 billion dollars in new spending is the cornerstone of the Harper government's budget, released today.

It looks like the budget will pass the House of Commons, with the Bloc Quebecois supporting the Tory government. The Liberals and NDP will vote against it.

Portage and District Chamber of Commerce President Anita Janzen-Gemmel doesn't see a lot of initiatives for business. However, two caught her attention -- the capital cost allowances for manufacturers to purchase new equipment and computers. Janzen-Gemmel thinks that could benefit some Portage-area businesses.

Portage Mayor Ken Brennan's happy to the see gas tax program has been extended to 2014.

RM of Portage Reeve Toby Trimble echoes that, and is also pleased there's money for highways, transit, and water treatment facilities.
