Knowing your neighbours could help stop crime before it starts. Constable Dave Higgs with the Portage RCMP believes communities have the power to control crime in their area, and he says being a part of Neighbourhood Watch is the way to do that. He says the program is meant to form a framework between neighbours, so they can report crime when they see it as well as deter potential criminals.
Higgs points out being part of the program is as simple as getting to know the people in your area, and familiarizing yourself with the neighbourhood watch program. He adds citizens will be armed with knowledge for crime reduction while building a better sense of community. Higgs encourages anybody interested in the Neighbourhood Watch program to contact their local RCMP.
