A 3-on-3 Hockey Tournament is taking place as part of the Normac Arena's 50th anniversary that's celebrated next weekend, March 3rd and 4th. It's all taking place in that facility.

Municipality of North Norfolk Facility Manager and Recreation Director Karl Gurke says they're dividing the ice into two ice surfaces.

"The team entry fee is $120.00 which needs to be paid at the first game," says Gurke. "We're planning to have games all Friday evening. All day Saturday, we have refreshments. The canteen is going to be open. It is just going to be an absolute blast."

3-on-3 Hockey is basically three skaters and a goalie on the ice at once.

"Instead of your standard five and a goalie, it's just three," notes Gurke.  "It's only half the ice surface, so it's not as much skating, as well, and it's a much smaller net. We don't use a standard-sized goalie net."

Gurke says cash prizes are the winnings.

"If we get enough teams, we will do cash prizes for the A side, the B side, and the C side. Depending on what we get for entries determines who gets the prizes. If we get a very small amount of teams entered, then they will be given a cash prize at the end of every game they win. If we get lots of teams entered, then we'll be doing the top, probably, six to eight teams for the whole weekend."

She explains it's been about ten years since they've done a 3-on-3 hockey tournament.

"The last time they did it at MacGregor, they had ten 3-on-3 teams. So, if we can get ten, well, I would be extremely happy with that."

Gurke adds it's a great comeback of the competition for MacGregor with a whole new generation to enjoy the fun.

"Money that's raised from the tournament or from Glow Curling is going toward future projects at the arena for renovations," adds Gurke. "We're most likely going to try to have a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning. We'll have a cash bar and our canteen will be open, as well, for anybody who wants to come for a burger and poutines, and they can have a beer at the same time."
