City hall is looking at a possible public transit option in the future for Portage la Prairie, and a lot of organizations in the city have contacted them to drop off letters of support.

Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation is one of those organizations, and executive director Victoria Espey says this topic has made the rounds in the community in the past. She feels now, however, is the perfect time to take those next steps.

"This has been a hot topic for a very long time," explains Espey. "Our population is growing, our poverty rate remains high and public transportation remains at the forefront of a lot of people's minds."

She mentions the PCRC along with multiple organizations they work with, agree that transportation has been one of the biggest barriers for some members of the community. She's glad progress is being made, but she's also not blind to some of the shortcomings of the plan so far.

"I agree with a lot of the councillors in their concerns that the report was missing a lot," notes Espey. "It, perhaps, didn't necessarily touch on how significant the need was in Portage rather than just giving some very basic options. I think there's a lot more that we can explore together with the city in how we could potentially move this forward in the future."

Letters of support for public transit options were also sent in from the Portage Urban Indigenous Peoples Coalition, BBBS Central Plains, Infinity Career & Consulting, the Family Resource Centre, and ROK Central.

City council will continue to discuss transit opportunities in future meetings.
