The Portage la Prairie Bear Clan has been busy picking up needles in the community since spring rolled around.

Jane Tully, Coordinator for the organization, says she has a team in Portage who carry needle clean-up packs.

"We get a lot of calls from people that simply don't know what to do with them, and it's kind of nice to be able to go and do the pickup and make sure the area is safe."

Tully outlines that the Bear Clan can be reached at 204-595-9017.

"It's a phone that people can call and leave a message on. It isn't always manned, but for sure, leave a message, and we will get back to the pickup within the day."

She notes that if a person sees a needle needing to be picked up, you can also leave a message on their Facebook inbox.

"I know that it's quite a concern in the community, and it's nice to be able to contribute to that."

The Bear Clan Coordinator says the group gets far more calls in the spring and summer than in winter.

"People have used and left their sharps out in the community somewhere, and as the snow disappears, these things start to melt out. I think because so many more people are outside in this weather, we seem to get quite a few more calls these days."

Tully adds that she has seen some parts of the city have problems with discovering needles this year.

"Because the downtown is so congested with the construction, but we're getting calls from different places this year. One of the places is the ballparks, and they're in the porta potties. It's a private place for people to go because there are no private places around downtown."

She notes that if anyone is interested in joining their crew and helping the community stay safe, don't hesitate to reach out.
