Emergency repairs to a city's water services can often be a pain, especially for a small business that depends on those services.

Adrienne Mekkes, owner of Styled With Meraki, has had the water turned off at her business a handful of times throughout the construction process to Saskatchewan Avenue, causing delays to appointments she had scheduled.

In the past, these disruptions to water services have come without warning, something Mekkes asked the city to think of when the next occasion arrives.

With the latest disruption coming this week, Mekkes says that the city kept her and other businesses in mind, giving them a fair amount of time notice, which she is very thankful for.

"At the beginning, it's obviously hard to work through, and you're not really sure what to do for assistance, and it sucks to reschedule all of your clients. But things like that happen, and emergencies happen. It's nice when you know about them in advance."

Mekkes extends a considerable shoutout to Larry Barron and Brian Taylor from the city's operations department for listening to her concerns and keeping her business in mind.

"They gave us a lot, or as much notice, as they could," she continues. "I gave him (Taylor) a call, and he said some realistic expectations for me. So, I was able to actually manage and do what I needed to do to make it work for our small company,"

Mekkes adds that after dealing with Taylor and City Council, she knows they care and are trying to do their best not to affect her business.

"It's awesome to be able to have notice. We have a 48-hour cancellation policy for our clients if they need to change an appointment. We need to do our part as a salon company to do that for them, too, right? To give them 48 hours' notice if something happens."

Mekkes notes that for the city to listen and give her a call when something like this comes up means the world to her.

"It is our livelihood, and without our customers and without our bookings, we wouldn't be here," she says.

Styled With Meraki has been open for the past four years and is located at 1200 Saskatchewan Ave.
