Delta Beach is slowly inching closer to the reality of having a marina.

The R.M. of Portage la Prairie mulled over the Portage and District Boat Launch Group's (PDBLG) request to enter into a lease agreement.

Deputy Reeve Garth Asham wants to make it clear: the R.M. will not provide funding for the project.

"Because it's on our land, the R.M. will enter into an agreement with them, but nothing monetary from the R.M. is going that way."

The PDBLG has been securing funding through various agencies and grants to make this a reality. The lease agreement has been reviewed by both parties and is close to signing. Asham explains what the marina will mean for the area.

"The channel is going to be designed to be able to put boats in it and go out straight out from the boat launch, plus all recreational users to use it."

The group is still securing the last bit of funding but hopes to have the project completed by 2021. Asham explains that this is a worthwhile project considering the uptick in rescues that have taken place on the beach.

"When the RCMP were called to go out, there isn't a boat launch at Delta. I mean, there are ways to put a boat out there. But, it's tough to launch a boat out there because of the depth of the water."
