Raymond Baptiste

With his family by his side, we announce the peaceful passing of Raymond Baptiste on Monday, August 22, 2022 in Winnipeg, at 72 years of age.

He was predeceased by beloved wife Joslyn Morgan Baptiste, and parents Richard and Mary Baptiste. Adoringly remembered by his daughter Raema Baptiste and grand-daughter Brielle Baptiste-Fletcher, siblings Michael Baptiste, Maureen Baptiste, Desmond Baptiste, and Lincoln (Shirley) Baptiste. Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews in the United States and Grenada, Teddy, Joel, Ramon, Jaime, Joselle, Kevin, and Rochel. Also, extended family and friends residing in Grenada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, including, surviving in-laws Velma Morgan, Roslyn (Tony) Morgan, Esther Morgan, Rawlyn Morgan, the Clouden & Thomas family, the Boca family, the McBurnie family, and his very special friend, Peron Johnson.

Born September 1, 1949, Raymond was third eldest son of 5 children born to Richard and Mary Baptiste. He grew up on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean dreaming of one day immigrating abroad. In the 1970’s he found himself heading for the prairies with the dream of creating a legacy for himself and his family to be. A few years later he was joined by his fiancée Joslyn, fresh from nursing school in England. Raymond and Joslyn were married in 1974. The couple had one daughter, and Raymond was fortunate enough to see the birth of his only grandchild come to pass in 2011. Raymond’s talent for car repair meant he as a natural fit for the local automotive industry, working for several dealerships over the years as a bodyman, most notably Craig Dunn Motor City. Here he was regarded as a consummate professional and made lasting friendships over the years.

For anyone who knew Raymond well, they’d know that playing cricket and soccer as a youngster were two of Raymond’s passion sports throughout his life.  Raymond’s involvement with the Portage Selects, a local men’s soccer team, lent to him receiving many trophies and medals over the years. He enjoyed carpentry and usually had some home improvement project on the go, perfectly marrying his gift for working with his hands and his perfectionist nature. After retirement, Raymond enjoyed cycling and spending hours in his yard keeping it immaculately manicured, leaving no weed untouched. Raymond was known for being a quiet man, with a loud smile, and an infectious laugh. Loyal and unconditionally loving, Raymond cherished family above all else. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 2:00pm, with the Reverend Norman Collier officiating, with viewing prior to the service. Interment will follow later in the Grenada Cemetery.
