An RCMP spokesperson disagrees with the myth claiming rural Manitoba is free of the criminal activity often reported in urban centres.

Steve Saunders points out there's crime in both rural and urban Manitoba -- but in spite of the shooting of two mounties in Saskatchewan, he feels the rural area isn't increasing in danger.

So far police records are consistent with his prediction.  To date only three homicides in RCMP jurisdictions have been investigated compared to the ten during this time last year.

Still Saunders admits rural Manitoba could be considered a hot-bed for criminal activity, although he says not all residents are used to that idea.
