Residents between 13th Street Northwest and 18th Street Northwest in Portage are looking to have access closed off to an abandoned railway bed.

Alf Carver made the request at last night's City Council meeting. He points out there's a danger from drug users, people setting off fireworks, and dropping off stolen vehicles, one of which was set on fire last month.

Councillor Orville Wagner sympathizes with residents, but notes the land belongs to the railways. He assures the process has begun to establish an agreement.
Wagner isn't certain any measures taken at denying access will be successful. Carver, meanwhile, says something has to be done before something serious happens.
