Oakville residents are no longer restricted to what type of dog they can own.
A ban on certain breeds of dog has been lifted by the RM of Portage. At yesterday's council meeting council made changes to the Oakville dog by-law. The by-law originally restricted residents from owning specific breeds which had shown a poor temperament in the past such as pitbulls. The by-law has now been changed and residents are allowed to own any breed they wish, however the dog must meet certain criteria listed in the new by-law. The new by-law states residents can't own what's been classified as a dangerous dog. Reeve Toby Trimble explains a dangerous dog is any dog which has bitten a person or domestic animal, chased livestock without the permission of the owner or harassed a person on public property.
